SATURN

The sixth planet from the sun,Saturn is one of the most beautiful planets in our system. It is also one of the biggest.Second in line to be exact. Information about the planet was retrieved mainly during the Voyager explorations in 1980-1981.It has a high speed rotation and now has flattened poles. It has about a ten hour day span and takes about thirty earth years to go around the sun. Hydrogen, helium, and methane make up its atmosphere with hydrogen being the dominant.Amazingly, it would float in water since water is more dense.Winds are extremely high, reaching about 500 m/s.

Saturn's rings are an outstanding feature that make it very noticeable. It has seven rings which are labeled A-G. Between certain rings, there are gaps. One gap,the Cassini Division, was discovered by Giovanni Cassini in 1675,thus given the name Cassini division.Another division ,the Encke, was found by Johann Encke in 1837.Why the rings formed is still a mystery, but some scientists think that moons on a collision course with comets or meteors may have formed them. What they are made of is also a mystery but they have found water to be a component. Some of the rings structures are because of the gravitation caused by some satellites that are close to the planet. Here is a rundown of its rings and gaps. We have the D ring, the Cring and then the Maxwell gap.Next is the B ring and the A ring , but inbetween is the Cassini Division. Next, two gaps, the Encke gap and the Keeler gap, lie together before giving way to the F,G, and E rings.

Saturn has many, many moons. While Earth only has one ,Saturn has 18. Well, 18 that have been confirmed so there may be more unsighted. A short note on the moons.Only one has a good atmosphere, which is Titan. Most of them move in coordination with each other. There are a couple which are considered regulars which means they move around Saturn in a circular orbit. The first that was found was found in 1655.This was Titan the most recently found one,Pan, was found in 1990.
