Jupiter

Big, magnificent, and beautiful would be three adjectives used to describe the planet Jupiter. Jupiter is the 5th planet from the Sun and the largest planet in our Solar System. Jupiter is very unique in every aspect of its structure. Of these features are the big red spot, which is considered to be the biggest anticyclonic storm in the Jovien atmosphere. Jupiter is also one of the four Giant Planets in our Solar System.

Jupiter has a mass of 1.90 x 10^27 kg. It is sized at a diameter of 142,800 km. Therefore, if Jupiter was hollow, you could fit about 1,000 Earth's inside. The average distance from the Sun is 5.203 AU. One AU is 93,000,000 miles, which is the average distance from the sun to the Earth. Distances in our Solar System are usually measured in AU's. This number is an average because the planet's orbit is not a circle but more of an ellipse. The period of rotation of Jupiter is 9.8 hours, in Earth hours. Also, the revolution period around the Sun is 11.86 years, in Earth years. Jupiter is on an axis, much like every other planet in the Solar System. The tilt of Jupiter's axis is at 3.08 degrees. The atmosphere is composed of 90% hydrogen, 10% helium, and .07% methane.

Jupiter is constucted with one massive ring, which is very faint. Inside that ring it is suspected to be made up of mostly dust and ice particles that are less than ten microns in diameter. Astronomers suspect the rings originated from micrometeorite bombardment of tiny moons which orbit within the ring. Jupiter's ring starts at about 30,000 km from Jupiter's center. Nothing can orbit Jupiter closer then that distance. This is called Rouche's Limit. Then the rings expand out to 129,000km.
