Rivers In The SunThe surface of the sun is shifting. By sunspots, it has long been known that our sun rotates. It was also known that the center of the sun rotates faster than the poles. Now recent measurements by the Solar Oscillations Investigations group of the SOHO Observatory have found that the surface of the sun moves in other ways, too. Hot electrically charged gas flows along and beneath the sun's surface. The speed of these solar rivers is false color, cooled with hydrogen moving faster than blue. Over the course of the year, plasma moves from the equator to the poles while internal eddies circulate gas from deep inside the sun. One surprise is the similarity to the motion of air in the earth's atmosphere, indicating that scientists might learn more about earth's global weather by studying the sun. |
COBE DIPOLESpeeding through the universe, our earth is not at rest. The earth moves around the sun. The sun orbits the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Milky Way Galaxy orbits in the local group. The local group falls towards the Virgo Great Cluster of Galaxies. These speeds are less than the speed that all of these objects together move relative to the microwave background. Radiation in the earth's direction of motion appears blue-shifted and hence hotter. This high speed was intially unexpected and its magnitude is still unexplained. |

THE GAMMA RAY MOONThe moon would appear brighter than the sun. This startling notion is demonstrated by this image of the moon from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope on board NASA's orbiting Compton's Gamma Ray Observatory. High energy changed particles from the cosmo's, known as cosmic rays, constantly bombarded the unprotected lunar surface generating Gamma Rays. The sun is sheilded from these particles by its magnetic feild. The most sensitve instrument of its kind, even EGRET cannot see the quiet sun which is faint at extreme gamma ray energies. |
