Hello, Today in Astronomy we are about to tell you about the planet in our sky that can be seen without a telescope!! Can you guess the planet? If you guessed Jupiter your correct. Jupiter is the fifth planet in the solar system and the largest. It is truly enourmous. Just for the diameter eleven earth's could fit it. And as for the inside of Jupiter more than a thousand earth's could fit inside. Can you imagine that!? We certainly can't!
You can only see the top of Jupiter's atmosphere which is a churning sea of colored clouds which are pink, tan, yellow, blue green, and gray. Many of them stretched around in bands marked by plumes, streaks, spots, and patches. How do we get such colors? According Jupiters atmospheric constituents should be colorless. The temperature with the compositions of Hydrogen and Helium with a smattering of hydrogen and copounds like methane and ammonia, astronomers have been hard pressed to explain the diversed colors that surround Jupiter. Alternatively, compounds of trace elements like sulfur may color the clouds. The colors indicate the clouds altutude, bule is lowest through red as highest. The dark colored bands are called belts and the light colored ones zones.
Jupiter has a tempertaure of 120 Kelvein degrees (-153 Celsius degrees) and a compositon domin- ated by Hydrogen (about 90%) and Helium (about 10%), Jupiter is a hot planet. It gives of twice as much heat as it receives from the sun. I don't think we would want to be there! Juipiteralso has rings that are dark and appear to consist of fine particles of rock. The origin of these rings remain unknown.
There was a rumor that Jupiter had parts missing! Is that for real? Of course not!! Actually the three dark spots are only shadows. The shadows of Io, Castillo, and Ganymede, which move across Jupiter as these moons progress in thier orbits. Jupiter has four large Galilean moons. They are are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Ganymede is Jupiter's largest moon with a diameter 3,100 miles which is larger than mercury and pluto. It contains ice and mineral deposits. Europa is the size of Earth's moon. Scientist believe that oceans may exist under its surface, probably the only oceans of waterin our Solar System. It might be the best place to look for life on places other than the earth. Callisto is the outmost of Galilean moons nearly two of earth. Surface is ice mixed with dust and under it all is a rock core. Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. It is constantly forming and reforrming because of this, and it's surface changes very rapidly.
We hoped that you enjoyed this presentation of Jupiter like we did. For Jupiter is truly a magni- ficiant planet with different diversities. In science you must be careful in you observations be- cause little mistakes can happen. For example when people thought Jupiter had parts missing it wasn't really true it was actually shadows. As we can see in all branches of science you must be able to record and analyze your data very carefully. Enjoy!!
