BEFORE DOWNLOADING ANYTHING:
- Go
online once per week to http://www.drennon.org/updates
and follow the instructions for keeping your antivirus software (AVG) up
to date.
- Do
not open any attachments form email.. even if it looks official… unless you are expecting it…
and…
- … even if you are expecting an email attachment, do not
directly open it yet!
- Instead,
use the SAVE AS option and save the attachment on your hard drive
in C:\downloads.
- Do the
same thing with mp3 files or other downloads from the internet. Never open
a file directly. Use the SAVE AS option and save the file to C:\downloads
- Open
C:\downloads with windows explorer (keystroke = WindowsKey-E).
- Right-click the new file that you wish to open and
choose to “Scan with AVG free”
- A
window will open and let you know if a virus is present. If the file is
safe to open, then open the file
EXAMPLE
In
the example below, I downloaded a file from the intenet
called “Computer_info.doc” using the SAVE AS option.
I saved it to C:\downloads.
I
then opened that location with Windows Explorer.
I
right clicked on the file that I wished to test and another window popped up.
I
left clicked on “Scan with AVG free”
The
antivirus program then scanned the file and showed a box saying FINISHED and NO VIRUS
FOUND.
I then safely openned the
file on my computer.
