Directions for Scandisk and defrag on Windows 2000, XP, NT:

SCANDISK:

(For Windows 2000, NT, and XP, your disk can not be scanned while the operating system is open. Thus you must schedule the process. Below, I write how to do that)

Open Windows Explorer (keystroke: Windows-E)

If "My Computer" has a "+" to the left, click the "+" to make it a "-"

Beneath "My Computer", find the C drive icon. Right click on it.

Select (left-click the mouse on) "Properties" in the gray box that opens. This will open a "Local Disk (C:) Properties" dialog box.

Click on the Tools tab in the "Local Disk (C:) Properties" dialog box.

Under "Error Checking", left-cllick on the "Check Now" button.

Place a check in the "automatically fix file system errors" check box by left-clicking the mouse over that box.

Left-click on the Start button.

A "checking disk C" box will open, explaining that the disk can only be checked at boot up. You will be asked if you want to do that. Select YES by left-clicking on the appropriate button.

Reboot your computer. (Your disk will be scaned at bootup.)

Hopefully, you will get no error message declaring bad sectors. If you do, email me.
